Welcome to Clara Brownell Middle School

Clara Brownell Middle School, the home of the Umatilla Vikings, educates approximately 340 sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students.  Located in the middle of the city, CBMS serves all the middle grade students from the Umatilla area.

Clara Brownell Middle School focuses on educating students for life.  The school’s academics consist of core, elective and selective classes.  The core education for CBMS students consists of humanities, an integration of language arts and social studies; math; science; health and physical education.  Elective and selective classes apply core concepts and skills while broadening the horizons of our students.  In a typical day, students attend each of their core classes and either an elective or benchmark class.

CBMS is structured into three teams.  The sixth grade students and their teachers make up the sixth grade team.  For the most part, the sixth grade team operates independently from the rest of the school.  This not only helps ease concerns of both students and parents as sixth graders enter middle school, but also helps develop a progression of independence as students move from one level to the next.  After laying a foundation in sixth grade, students move on to the seventh and then eighth grade teams, with four teachers at each grade level.  We also have a team of specialists that includes teachers of health, physical education and music.  The teams are structured and organized to build community among students, staff and parents.  The team approach also helps assure curriculum alignment, continuous student growth, and enhances the home and school connection.

Clara
Brownell Middle School
developed these shared beliefs for the students, staff, parents and the community we serve:

School Motto: Challenging, Believing, Motivating, Succeeding

Challenging every student to do their very best at all times is a key goal in our educational environment.

Believing every student is capable of learning is key in our school environment.  Teachers and staff provide programs and services which make learning meaningful and relevant.

Motivating every student to do his or her very best is another key to achieving our educational goals.

Succeeding as a student and as a member of our school, community and society is essential in our learning environment.
